I live in subsidized housing or have a section 8 voucher
You still have rights!
We recommend verifying with your Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) case worker before deciding next steps. You are not covered under local or state law rent ordinances. However, Oakland Housing Authority needs to approve any rent increases you are receiving. Under OHA rules and CA law, you need to get at least a 60 day notice before paying a rent increase. The landlord has to submit a copy of that notice to section 8 as well. Section 8 has to approve that rent increase. If you do no receive a notice from section 8 approving the notice, please try contacting them immediately before paying. Your landlord CANNOT increase your rent bypassing Oakland housing Authority as that is illegal.
