Landlord is threatening me with words, gestures, or physical harm
Being threatened by your landlord can be scary and often pushes people to leave their homes even if they don’t want to or can’t afford to.
You are protected under CA law and may be protected under the Oakland Tenant Protection Ordinance if you’re eligible. Under the Oakland Tenant Protection Ordinance, guests are now protected from threats of physical harm or gestures.
To exercise your rights, document everything!
Keep a notebook somewhere safe where you document incidents. If you can, make sure you keep a record of time, date, occurrence, and quotes from your landlord. You can also document by using pictures and/or videos. Talk to your neighbors if possible, to see if they have similar agreements. We know that situations like these can lead to physical violence so we recommend you talk to someone and create a plan that works for you and your family right away.
